How can speech production skills be predicted from visual, auditory, and haptic perception skills?

چکیده
How does speech production relate to speech perception? To investigate the most suitable perceptual factors to predict the production skills of a speaker, we determined the visual acuity for speech movements, the auditory acuity for speech sounds, and the haptic acuity of speech organs, following equivalent protocols in all three modalities. These abilities were linked to the individual’s distinctness of articulation. We tested 26 German cochlear implant wearers and a normal hearing control group of matching age and gender. Our data suggest that in normal hearers, visual, auditory, and haptic skills are suitable to predict the production performance. However, this result could not be confirmed for cochlear implant wearers. Compared with the control group, cochlear implant wearers produced significantly less distinct sibilants s and S, but some of them performed surprisingly well in the test for auditory acuity for sibilants.

Assessment of Auditory Skills of Children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Background: An integral part of a comprehensive auditory training program is the assessment of individual auditory skills. In addition, most therapists will want to evaluate the hearing ability of their pupils in a more formal manner and in approximately the same way and comparing their auditory abilities to regroup them for communication activities. Conclusion: Evaluation and informal observa...
متن کاملThe sound of your lips: electrophysiological cross-modal interactions during hand-to-face and face-to-face speech perception
Recent magneto-encephalographic and electro-encephalographic studies provide evidence for cross-modal integration during audio-visual and audio-haptic speech perception, with speech gestures viewed or felt from manual tactile contact with the speaker's face. Given the temporal precedence of the haptic and visual signals on the acoustic signal in these studies, the observed modulation of N1/P2 a...
متن کاملThe touch of your lips: haptic information speeds up auditory speech processing
The human ability to follow speech gestures through the visual modality is a core component of speech perception. Remarkably, speech can be perceived not only by the ear and by the eye but also by the hand, with speech gestures felt from manual tactile contact with the speaker’s face. In the present study, early crossmodal interactions were investigated by comparing early auditory evoked potent...
متن کاملObjective Biological Measures for the Assessment and Management of Auditory Processing Disorder
Auditory processing impairments negatively impact language learning, the ability to listen effectively in noisy environments, and the development of reading skills. Behavioral assessments of auditory processing provide valuable insight into auditory function but lack information about the biological health of the auditory pathway, and can be complicated by comorbid disorders, alertness, and mot...
